“Steep Thoughts” Blog
When do people google for UVic courses?
The answer seems to be "early in the week". Judging by our Google Webmaster data, every week there is a spike in course searches around Monday/Tuesday, which dies off as the week progresses. During the weekend it's nearly non-existent! Check out a little graph we made:
Let's hope UVic students are having a blast during their weekends, and staying away from computers :) In case you do need an easy way to see what courses UVic has, check out our UVic Course Browser.
CommentsAnonymously Discuss UVic Courses
TeaGraph users can now discuss UVic courses with fellow students.
The main goal of course discussions is to provide students with a better overview of courses. A lot of times official calendar descriptions are dry and not terribly informative - it might be hard to gauge what it is you'll be doing exactly. We think that letting students describe courses to others would help solve that problem. Hopefully we can use these comments to improve courses themselves, as they will provide useful feedback to instructors.
In order to leave a comment on a course page you'd need to register, but we've made it a very quick and easy process - no email is required, just give us some name (any name - could be your real one, or, better yet, something made up), and a password. The whole process takes literally couple of seconds.
We specifically decided against integrating with Facebook, so that real names are not associated with comments. Feel free to tell your fellow students what you really think about certain courses ;) Did something in the course just suck? Was the course unfair? Did you really, really enjoy some project? Tell us!
Threaded comments and lots of other discussion features are coming over next couple of weeks.
All of this is very new, so let us know what you think of it, and especially if it decides to break :)
CommentsSave money on textbooks with TeaGraph
We now help you save money by making it easier to buy your required textbooks online!
If textbooks are available for purchase online - and most of the time they are much cheaper than at the book store - course page will display a direct link that you can use to purchase these textbooks. We also show you new and used prices at the bookstore itself, so you can pick the best option.
Enjoy, and let us know if you found a good deal :)
CommentsRequired Books & Materials for UVic courses
We've just pushed out a new feature for UVic students: see which books are required for your courses!
On majority of UVic course pages we are now displaying which books and other materials (like clickers) are required, and how much they will cost you, new and used, at the Bookstore.
For example, here's a screenshot from CSC 225:
This is just a start though - we're working on helping you find the cheapest possible way to buy these books! That's coming out in several more days.
Books & Materials is currently in beta testing, so please let us know of any issues or discrepancies you may encounter.
CommentsVarious interface bugs fixed
Some of the latest updates introduced severe UI issues, mainly causing search interface to stop functioning properly. As of now, these issues are all fixed and measures were taken to prevent similar errors from occurring again.
CommentsNew feature: see who's teaching courses
Course pages just became more informative: you can now see who's teaching them.
We're showing names of professors as well as their overall and easiness ratings (from RateMyProfessors.com). There's also a quick link to professor's RMP page so that you can read what students think about them.
Here's what this looks like now. The following is a snippet of profs teaching CSC 110:

Updated course scheduling for UVic
We've just updated our scheduling information to reflect UVic's summer schedule, which seems to be available now. Scheduling for the previous academic year (2010/2011) is also shown, so that you can get an idea of what schedules might look like this year.
As UVic schedules courses for the rest of the year, we will be updating our database to keep up!
